20-2. The bridge of Glenn McDuffie’s nose appears narrower than the kissing sailor’s in Lieutenant Jorgensen’s photograph. (Permission granted by Dr. Norman Sauer)

McDuffie’s nose is not the only physical contrast that compromises his claim to a part in Eisenstaedt’s famous photograph. A comparison of his hairline in 1945 to that of the kissing sailor also works against his contention. Lois Gibson disagrees. She argues that a consideration of McDuffie’s hairline actually supports her sailor’s case. On the same Good Morning America show when she spoke of McDuffie’s nose growing by 18 percent, Gibson pointed to an enlarged photo of the kissing sailor and McDuffie to suggest the following: “The hairline is the same right here. You lose hair on top. Okay, you’re eighty years old. You lose hair on top but right here you have the same identical hairline.” Upon initial consideration, Gibson seems to score a point. After all, the V-J Day sailor’s hairline does appear to match the lower contour of McDuffie’s hairline today. However, an examination of this hairline on other campaigning kissing sailors turns up matches as well. This scrutiny represents no breakthrough observation, although Gibson’s remarks makes one think otherwise.
